If you are considering dental implants, selecting the right implant doctor demands just as much attention.
With proper diagnosis, treatment & post treatment maintenance, dental implants can be part of your body for many, many years – very possibly for the rest of your life.
A single trained implant doctor often provides complete treatment from diagnosis through surgery to final restoration, but far more commons is a “Team” approach in which the implant surgery & restoration are handled by different specialist doctors.
The doctors whom place & restore implants or belong to an implant team are not “Specialists” in the way that periodontists, oral surgeons are. They don’t have to meet specific educational requirements or certification requirements in order to practice implant dentistry as other doctors have to meet.
Usually general dentists are dentists those have completed their graduation (BDS) for 5 years. Not all general dentists work with dental implants. Of those who do, most concentrate on restoring the implants with new crowns, bridges & over dentures after implant have been placed by a surgical specialist like a periodontist or an oral surgeon. A small no of general dentist handle both surgery & restoration.
PERIODONTICS & IMPLANTOLOGY
The periodontists are dental specialists who have done their Post-Graduation for 3 years (MDS) after completing graduation (BDS) and are surgically trained. They treat gum tissue that surrounds the teeth and other hard & soft tissues of the mouth. They place implants & perform supplementary surgeries like bone augmentation, sinus grafting & nerve repositioning etc. Some of them also restore implants. Periodontist are the best qualified dental specialist to visit for dental implants as they handle the tissue very well.
The Oral Surgeons are also surgically trained, those who have completed their Post-Graduation (MDS). They also place implants; few of them also restore implants.
Prosthodontics are those who also have done their Post-Graduation & are specialize in making crowns, bridges, dentures & other forms of replacement teeth. Most of them restore dental implants but few place them.
Typically you don’t have to choose your whole dental implant team. Once you find a good periodontist or an oral surgeon you want to work with, chances are good that He / She will refer you to the companion professional with whom He / She routinely work.
